REPORT ON RELEASE 1993

The breeding season of 1992/93 turned out to be much better than the previous one. At least 9 birds became available for release. We were glad to start reintroduction at the 4th release site: National Parc Argentera-Mercantour. Each of the "traditional" releasing sites (Rauris/Austria, Haute-Savoie/France and Swiss NP/Switzerland) received 2 birds, while the additional site of Argentera-Mercantour (Italy-France) was provided with three birds.

Released Bearded Vultures from 1986 to 1993

Sites:

RAURIS/Austria
HAUTE-SAVOIE/France
ENGADIN/Switzerland
ARGENTERA-MERCANTOUR/ltaly-France

Synopsis:

Rauris
Between 1986 and 1993, 21 Bearded Vultures were released: 10 males and 11 females (offsprings of 8 different breeding pairs). One female ("Nina", released 1987) died, one male and one female had to be recaptured. ("Winnie", 1986 and "Hubsi", 1990), two males are missing ("Heinz" since 1987 and "Ulli" since March 1992).

Haute-Savoie
Nineteen Bearded Vultures were released since 1987. Eight males, ten females and one of unknown sex. They are descendents of 9 different breeding pairs. Two males and one female died. One male ("Saturnin") is missing since 1987.

Engadin
Between 1991 and 1993,7 Bearded Vultureswere released in the Swiss NP. Four males and 3 females, offspring of 6 different pairs. Up to now no losses have been reported, and no bird is missing.

Argentera-Mercantour
In 1993, the first 3 Bearded Vultures, one male and two females (offsprings of 2 pairs) were released. All three have been observed in the Agentera-Mercantourarea at the end of October 1993.

Total
Within the framework of the Bearded Vulture Project a total of 50 young Bearded Vultures have been released into the Alps since 1986.
23 of them are males, 26 females, while the sex of one bird is not determined.
Their parentage are twelve different pairs within the breeding network.
Two youngs had to be recaptured, four died and three are missing.
At the present time, 41 Bearded Vultures should, theoretically, be living free.
